Difference Between Spam and Email Marketing?

Is there a difference between spam email and email marketing? If you were to recieve both, could you distinguish between them? Please state WHY they're different, one word answers don't exactly help. Thanks

Are you designing a marketing campaign? If you don't understand the difference, your e-mail is most likely spam.
Spam is the vernacular term for unsolicited commercial e-mail or UCE. When you send UCE, you annoy people. The only time you should send me e-mail is when you have a prior established business relationship with me AND I have explicitly granted you permission to send me e-mail. Hope this helps.

Email marketing involves a specific message and offer that is targetted to a specific person who has given you permission to send the email to them. Spam sends the same offer to many unspecific people who have not given persmission to send the email.

To me they are not different in any way: Spam is the terminology used by the recipients; E-mail Marketing is an expression used by the senders!
